Instrument Making (Ney) - V. Varcan
One of the basic elements of the sema ceremonies, the Ney is an indispensable instrument of the Mevlevi music. It takes the name 'nay', which means reed in Persian, and 'ney' in Turkish. The one who blows ney is also called neyzen. In this element, which is accepted as the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity under the name of 'Mevlevi Sema Ceremonies', the reed and neyzenness is described.
The history
The ney, a special wind instrument, is produced from nine-knuckled reed, which should be just as special. This cane is emptied and holes are drilled on it with the help of a special chisel. Because of this process, traditionally the phrase 'open what' is used instead of 'to do'.
